Dolly Parton's Posthumous Memoir Fetches $13 Million in Bidding War
A previously undisclosed memoir by the late country music icon Dolly Parton has reportedly been sold for $13 million to Grand Central Publishing.
A secret memoir penned by the late country music icon Dolly Parton has reportedly sold for $13 million following an intense bidding war, Page Six has reported. The book was acquired by Grand Central Publishing, with Folio Literary Management handling the sale.
Sources described the bidding as fierce, reaching an impasse when Folio informed publishers that an offer of $12 million had been received. According to insiders, publishers paused their bids, prompting Folio to re-engage with editors. Grand Central Publishing ultimately increased its offer to secure the book.
While some reports indicate the final sale price was $13 million, an insider suggested the actual sum was lower but includes a 50/50 split in royalties, a larger share than is typical. Parton's posthumous work places her among high earners for celebrity memoirs, with figures like Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen, Amy Schumer, and Keith Richards also receiving substantial advances for their books.
It remains unclear when Parton wrote the memoir, but her former manager indicated that the singer was actively working up until her death. He stated that Parton had been planning for the future, working with a chosen team to develop a roadmap for her projects that would extend for decades. He assured fans that projects launched through official channels had received her personal approval.
Parton died at the age of 80 on August 28, following a battle with cancer. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death, stating it was Dolly's wish for him to share the news. He reflected that Parton had "lived in the light" and was now "in the arms of Jesus."
Recently, Parton's niece, Danielle, was named the brand ambassador for the late country icon's estate. Danielle expressed pride in being part of the legacy and carrying it forward, emphasizing the Parton values of hard work and big dreams. Her announcement included a pre-recorded message from Dolly Parton herself.
The news of the memoir sale follows a recent tribute concert held in Parton's honor, titled CMA Presents I Will Always Love You, which featured performances by prominent music artists.
