Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' Welsh Version Lyrics Mistakenly Uploaded as Irish on Spotify
The streaming service removed the incorrect lyrics after being contacted by the BBC.
The lyrics for Dolly Parton's Welsh version of her iconic song "Jolene" were incorrectly posted as Irish on Spotify, according to a BBC report. The song, a collaboration with Welsh singer-songwriter Bronwen Lewis and Parton's niece Jada Star, features parts sung in both English and Welsh.
Spotify removed the erroneous Irish lyrics after the BBC inquired about the error. The streaming service did not immediately respond to questions regarding when the single and lyrics were uploaded, when the mistake was identified, or when the correct lyrics would be reinstated. The single was released on October 9 and is the second posthumous release from Parton, who had Welsh ancestry.
Lewis, from Neath, translated "Jolene" into Welsh and shared it on social media, which led to Star proposing a recording of the song in Welsh. Parton subsequently joined the collaboration.
Parton, who passed away on August 25, was a celebrated artist with 10 Grammy awards, over 100 million records sold worldwide, and a songwriting catalog exceeding 3,000 songs. Her original version of "Jolene," released in 1973, has garnered over one billion streams on Spotify.
Research into Parton's heritage has suggested her ancestors may have originated from Machynlleth, in Powys, Wales, rather than Conwy, as was previously believed. Parton herself had alluded to her Welsh roots during a 2008 concert in Cardiff.
