Dolly Parton Day Celebrated Globally with Festivities and Philanthropy

Communities across the globe are dedicating Friday, September 25, to celebrating the life and legacy of country music superstar Dolly Parton. The date, chosen as a nod to her hit song "9 to 5," has become an unofficial Dolly Parton Day, marked by various events and tributes.

In the United States, numerous state and local governments, from California to New York City, have issued proclamations recognizing Dolly Parton Day. These declarations often highlight her successful career and her enduring commitment to promoting literacy. Nashville, where Parton has resided for decades, is honoring the singer with pink lights, posters, and giveaways. Southwest Airlines is also participating by hosting Parton-inspired karaoke for travelers and employees.

Mayor Freddie O’Connell of Nashville stated, "Dolly Parton’s impact on Nashville will be felt for generations, through the music she has given us, the people she has helped and the example she continues to set. She has shown us that caring for a community means showing up for one another."

Further celebrations include a parade led by the marching group Krewe of Dolly through New Orleans' French Quarter and a "Dolly Day" public event in San Francisco aimed at celebrating life with kindness and music.

Parton's philanthropic efforts, particularly her Imagination Library book giveaway program, are a central focus of the day's commemorations. This initiative has distributed over a million books monthly to children in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia. The Imagination Library is encouraging public support through direct donations to local partners or by helping to establish new programs. "For Dolly, giving was always personal and from her heart," said Jeff Conyers, president of The Dollywood Foundation. "She believed deeply in helping people, especially children, and she always felt if you are in a position to help, you should help."

Some tattoo artists are reportedly offering Dolly-inspired tattoos, while others are simply enjoying her extensive music catalog.

Parton, known for hits like "9 to 5," "Jolene," and "I Will Always Love You," expressed a desire for her work to have a lasting impact and for her to be remembered for her efforts to improve the world.
