Disney+ Apologizes for Unscheduled Ad Break During Women's Champions League Match

Disney+ has confirmed that a three-minute advert break during a Women's Champions League match between Arsenal and HB Koge was unscheduled, attributing the interruption to a technical issue. The incident, which occurred while the teams were drawing 0-0 in the second half, was one of several technical problems experienced by viewers during the broadcast. Fans voiced frustration on social media, describing the coverage as "gimmicky" and detrimental to the perception of women's football.

Arsenal ultimately won the match 1-0 with a stoppage-time penalty. The broadcast also featured elements such as a guest dog with a significant Instagram following, a vegetable platter being served, and a rotating studio floor. The show, dubbed "The Hangout," is a new live studio segment designed to offer pre-match build-up, half-time analysis, and post-match reaction. Disney stated that it is taking steps to prevent similar interruptions in the future.

Viewers also reported other technical difficulties, including players being unable to hear questions during interviews and audio synchronization problems. One segment showed a non-football-themed quiz during a period of restored sound. Critics argued that the emphasis on unconventional content detracted from the serious analysis and respect they felt women's football deserved.

Similar concerns about the presentation of women's football have arisen previously. In November, the Women's League Cup quarter-final and semi-final draw faced criticism for its presenter, social media influencer GK Barry. That same month, Sky Sports discontinued its female-focused TikTok channel, Halo, after it received backlash for posts described as "patronising" and "sexist."

Disney+ is scheduled to continue its Women's Champions League coverage on Wednesday with Chelsea's match against Austria Wien.
