Depeche Mode Fans Revive Iconic 1988 Prague Photo on Charles Bridge

A distinctive queue now forms daily on Prague's historic Charles Bridge, as tourists gather to recreate an iconic 1988 photograph of the British electro-rock band Depeche Mode. The trend centers around a black-and-white image captured by photographer Anton Corbijn, showing band members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore standing beside the Pietà sculpture on the 14th-century landmark.

Depeche Mode first visited Prague in March 1988, playing a concert across the Iron Curtain in communist Czechoslovakia. They returned later that year with Corbijn, who documented their exploration of the city for his book, “Depeche Mode: Strangers.” The image featuring the Pietà sculpture has become particularly resonant with fans.

While fans have been recreating the photo for years, a recent surge, potentially amplified by viral social media content and fan gatherings during the band's 2024 Prague concerts, has fueled a modern-day boom. The recreated photo is currently trending with millions of views online.

Visitors are drawn to the experience for various reasons. Jorge Sanchez from California, recalling the original photograph, sought it out during his visit. "I think it fit at the time, you know, with their music, you know, and their message and their music with your personal Jesus and all of that, so it’s kind of fitting," he said.

Maria Hofer and Lara Hinteregger from Austria discovered the trend on platforms like Pinterest and TikTok. "We just saw this on Pinterest or on TikTok, and it’s kind of one of the most famous pictures you can take here in Prague," Hofer stated. Hinteregger added, "Yeah, and we also like the vibe of the music. We feel like it fits the vibe of the city pretty well."

The Charles Bridge itself holds historical significance. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a popular tourist spot, is associated with a legend of his torture and death in 1393. Touching the engravings at the base of this statue is said to bring good luck and ensure a return to Prague. While it is unclear if the band members interacted with the Nepomuk statue in 1988, their presence and Corbijn's photographs have given fans a compelling new reason to visit and connect with the city.
