Dennis Haskins, Beloved 'Saved by the Bell' Principal, Dies at 75

Actor Dennis Haskins, who endeared himself to a generation as the ever-patient Principal Richard Belding on the popular NBC sitcom "Saved by the Bell," has died at the age of 75. His agent, Jay Schachter, confirmed the news on Monday, calling it a "tragic loss."

"Everyone loved Mr. Belding and those of us who got to know Dennis, loved him even more," Schachter said in a statement to TMZ. "He was a great person, and he loved, I mean absolutely LOVED his fans. He always had time for them, no matter what."

The cause of Haskins' death was not immediately clear.

Haskins, a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, first portrayed the school administrator on "Good Morning, Miss Bliss," the precursor to "Saved by the Bell," which aired on the Disney Channel from 1988 to 1989. The series was later rebranded as "Saved by the Bell" and ran on NBC from 1989 to 1993, followed by "Saved by the Bell: The New Class" from 1993 to 2000.

He reprised the role of Principal Belding in subsequent "Saved by the Bell" specials, including "The College Years" in 1993 and "Wedding in Las Vegas" in 1994. Haskins also appeared alongside his "Saved by the Bell" co-stars in a sketch on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" in February 2015. The cast included Mario Lopez, Lark Voorhies, Tiffani Amber Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, and the late Dustin Diamond.

In a 2013 interview with Parade, Haskins reflected on the enduring popularity of his signature role. "When we got to the full-on Saved by the Bell, I knew it was something special because the energy was different, the kids were a little bit older, the dynamic was great between everybody, and we were having a great time," he recalled. He noted that the show gained momentum after its Saturday morning run, allowing viewers to connect with the characters.

"I had the best job of all. The principal stayed while the kids came and went," Haskins said. "So I had a steady job for eleven years. For me, that’s long-term. But I know that what everybody loves is the original Saved by the Bell."

Haskins' television career extended beyond Bayside High, with appearances in shows such as "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper," "How I Met Your Mother," "New Girl," "Hot in Cleveland," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," and "Mad Men." His film credits include "A Million Ways to Die in the West" and "Trailer Park Shark."

Before his breakout role, Haskins appeared in numerous 1980s shows, including "Archie Bunker's Place," "The Greatest American Hero," "Simon & Simon," "The Fall Guy," "CHiPs," "Knots Landing," "The Dukes of Hazzard," and "Magnum, P.I."

Haskins was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he played basketball and was involved in campus media and theater. He was a co-founder of the community theater group Harlequins and served as the university's student entertainment chairman, organizing events that included a 1973 performance by Ike and Tina Turner.

In his earlier career, Haskins also entertained troops through USO tours in Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Afghanistan, Oman, Pakistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

News of Haskins' passing was met with heartfelt tributes on social media, with many fans remembering his memorable portrayal of Mr. Belding. "Another legend gone too soon," one user wrote on X. "The principal of the 90s. If you were a kid during that time, he was on your TV every Saturday morning. Rest easy Dennis."

Haskins is survived by his son, Dustin.
