David Threlfall Cast as Sorting Hat in HBO's Harry Potter Series

David Threlfall, known for his role as Frank Gallagher in the British series Shameless, has been cast as the Sorting Hat in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series. The 73-year-old actor will voice the iconic magical object responsible for assigning Hogwarts students to their houses in the first season, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

HBO also announced casting for several other characters, including Hogwarts ghosts and the Fat Lady. Leo Bill will portray Nearly Headless Nick, Andrew Brooke is cast as the Bloody Baron, and Daniel Fearn will play the Fat Friar. Laura Smyth has been selected to play the Fat Lady, who guards the Gryffindor common room.

Earlier casting news revealed Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn as James and Lily Potter, the titular wizard's parents, who appeared in flashbacks and photographs in the film adaptations. Harry Gilby will portray Charlie Weasley, a character who makes his screen debut in the series after being a minor figure in the books and absent from the films.

Dominic McLaughlin is set to star as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Other notable cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Kit Harington is slated to join in the second season as Gilderoy Lockhart.

The series, based on J.K. Rowling's beloved books, is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner. Rowling herself serves as an executive producer on the HBO show.

Filming for the second season is anticipated to commence this autumn. Rowling has expressed enthusiasm for the scripts, calling them "SO, SO, SO GOOD" in a social media post. The upcoming series aims to be a more faithful adaptation of the books than the original film franchise.

Since its announcement in 2023, the Harry Potter series has faced controversy, partly due to Rowling's public statements on women's rights, which some have labeled as transphobic. This has led to calls for boycotts of her work, with some actors reportedly withdrawing from the project. Both HBO and fans are hopeful that the enduring popularity of the wizarding world will overcome these challenges.

The production has also encountered other issues, including reports of thefts from the prop room and a dispute over on-set bullying allegations involving young extras. Paapa Essiedu, playing Severus Snape, has spoken about receiving racist abuse and death threats from critics who believe a Black actor should not portray the character.

HBO's Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day on HBO Max.
