David Threlfall Cast as Sorting Hat in Harry Potter HBO Series

David Threlfall, known for his role as Frank Gallagher in the British series Shameless, has been cast as the Sorting Hat in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter television series. Threlfall, 73, will voice the iconic magical object responsible for assigning Hogwarts students to their respective houses.

The casting announcement comes as HBO reveals further additions to the series' ensemble, including actors for several Hogwarts ghosts and the Fat Lady. Leo Bill will portray Nearly Headless Nick, Andrew Brooke is cast as the Bloody Baron, and Daniel Fearn will play the Fat Friar. Laura Smyth has been tapped to play the Fat Lady, the portrait guarding Gryffindor tower.

Earlier casting news included Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn as Harry Potter's parents, James and Lily Potter. Charlie Weasley will be played by Harry Gilby, marking the character's screen debut. In the original books, Charlie is a minor character and did not appear in the film adaptations.

The series, which is set to premiere on HBO on December 25 and is based on J.K. Rowling's novels, will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for its first season. The narrative follows Harry Potter as he discovers his magical heritage and enrolls at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, ultimately facing the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort.

Dominic McLaughlin is set to star as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Other confirmed cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Kit Harington is slated to join in the second season as Gilderoy Lockhart.

Since its announcement in 2023, the Harry Potter series has faced controversy, partly due to J.K. Rowling's public statements on women's rights, which some activists have labeled as transphobic. These criticisms have led to calls for boycotts of her work, although Rowling is an executive producer on the HBO show. Some actors involved have reportedly faced backlash.

Filming for the second season is anticipated to begin this autumn. Rowling has expressed enthusiasm for the scripts of the first two episodes, describing them as "SO, SO, SO GOOD." The new series is intended to be a more faithful adaptation of the books than the original film series, which concluded over a decade ago.

The production has encountered other challenges, including the reported departure of the actress cast as Ginny Weasley and incidents of theft from the prop room. Paapa Essiedu, playing Severus Snape, has spoken about receiving death threats, with critics objecting to a Black actor in the role previously portrayed by Alan Rickman. Accusations of bullying on set involving young extras have also been reported, leading Warner Brothers to issue warnings regarding behavior.
