Danni Eliminated as First Contestant from Great British Bake Off

Danni, an HGV service administrator from Dorset, has become the first contestant to be eliminated from the 17th series of The Great British Bake Off. The elimination occurred during biscuit week after judges noted their cookies were "powdery."

Danni, who is vegan, explained during the episode that they were unable to taste their own cookies because the ingredients included cream and butter. Judge Paul Hollywood made the comment about the texture, while fellow judge Nigella Lawson noted that the cookies had "too much cinnamon and bicarb," adding it is "impossible to know what you are baking if you don't taste it."

Despite the early exit, Danni expressed positive sentiments about their experience. They described competing on Bake Off as "absolutely fantastic, on and off camera" and stated that the competition provided "some of the best advice about how to improve something that I love." Danni particularly enjoyed the technical challenges, comparing them to a "puzzle."

Reflecting on their time in the tent, Danni mentioned initial reservations about making friends due to their self-described eccentric and "Marmite" personality. However, they were pleasantly surprised by the camaraderie among the contestants. "I wasn't expecting to make friends. I wasn't expecting there to be so many lovely, lovely people," Danni said. "It wasn't a competitive environment at all, it's just a bit of fun you are having with your friends."

Following their departure, Danni stated, "I am really happy that I was the first one out because I know everyone in there has more skills than me." They also noted a personal realization: "I think I've learned something about myself, which is that in the right circumstances I can make quite a few friends. Finding love in a group of strangers – that's just beautiful."

Danni added that being the weakest baker meant they now have "11 other people to bug about baking questions now whenever I want."

Hairdresser Tom, from West Yorkshire, was named star baker during the episode. The contestants' challenges included making American-style cookies, recreating iced gems, and constructing a "visually striking" biscuit mosaic.
