'Coven Academy' Stars Discuss Sisterhood, Love Triangles, and Character Arcs

The stars of the new supernatural series "Coven Academy"—Malina Pauli Weissman, Jordan Leftwich, and Ora Duplass—have shared insights into their characters' journeys, the show's compelling sisterhood, and significant plot twists.

The series, available on Disney+ and Hulu, features a soundtrack with songs from artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, and Gracie Abrams. Ora Duplass highlighted the significance of the song “You Stole the Show” in the season finale, calling it a "huge one" and expressing excitement about Sienna Spiro's contribution.

"Coven Academy" follows aspiring witches Briar (Weissman), Sasha (Leftwich), and Tegan (Duplass) as they form a coven at Crescent Veil Academy. While the trio developed a strong bond on and off-screen, the show also explores a love triangle involving Briar, a vampire named Ollie (Louis Thresher), and a warlock named Jake (Malachi Barton). Weissman admitted to being torn between the two options for her character, expressing a preference for "Team Briar."

The actors discussed how they formed their on-screen sisterly bond. Leftwich stated they did not know each other prior to the series but approached the role with an open mind. Duplass noted that the creator, Tim Federle, specifically cast them to balance each other out, facilitating a natural click. Weissman added that their individual differences contributed to their characters' cohesive dynamic.

Jordan Leftwich discussed the implications of Sasha's brother being revealed as alive and turned into a vampire. This revelation presents a conflict, given Sasha's family's historical dislike for vampires, and Leftwich suggested it could lead Sasha to either open up or take drastic measures.

Ora Duplass explored Tegan's selfless nature, attributing it to a difficult family life marked by hardship and a sense of responsibility as a peacemaker. Duplass indicated that Tegan's past experiences make her inclined to support those around her, especially when she receives support in return.

Malina Pauli Weissman spoke about her experience working with Tiffani Thiessen, who portrays Miss Graves, a character who is eventually revealed to be Briar's mother. Weissman described Thiessen as bringing positive energy to the set and noted a natural chemistry between them that translated into their scenes. The reveal of Miss Graves' true identity was a surprise to the cast, with Weissman recalling finding out about two weeks before filming the related scenes.

Leftwich also touched on Sasha's decision to turn down an acceptance to a prestigious academy in Florence to stay with her friends, suggesting Sasha might have future regrets or desires to explore options in Italy.

Duplass expressed hope for the burgeoning relationship between Tegan and McKenna, noting its genuineness despite McKenna's initial portrayal as a "mean girl." Duplass believes Tegan's kindness could foster growth in McKenna, and anticipates Briar and Sasha would support Tegan's happiness in this relationship.

The cast also shared their favorite songs from the series' soundtrack. Leftwich favored Olivia Rodrigo's "Brutal." Weissman was moved by a love song featured during a scene where Ollie gives her a box, and Duplass pointed to "You Stole the Show" and Gracie Abrams' "Cool."

Additionally, the actors reminisced about working with Devon Sawa, known for his role in "Casper." They described him as a grounded, cool, and funny presence on set, who also offered supportive advice during personal conversations.
