Cornish Fishing Village Set to Feature in New Harry Potter Series
Cadgwith, a picturesque village on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula, will make an appearance in the upcoming HBO adaptation of the beloved book series.
The small Cornish fishing village of Cadgwith is set to gain international recognition as a filming location for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series, scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day. This picturesque spot, located on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula, joins a list of UK destinations that have previously served as backdrops for the franchise.
Cadgwith, largely off the tourist radar, boasts thatched-roof cottages, cobbled streets, and a historic charm dating back to the 16th century. It remains a working fishing community, with its harbor active in crab and lobster fishing. The village's natural beauty and old-world atmosphere made it an attractive location for filmmakers.
Filming took place last year, with young actor Dominic McLaughlin reportedly spotted in costume as Harry Potter. The Cadgwith Cove Inn, a 400-year-old establishment with seven guest rooms and a pub, was one of the specific locations used. The inn, described as having retained its character since the village's smuggling days, features walls adorned with relics from its seafaring history. Rooms are available from £70 per night.
Scenes were also filmed on the village's beaches, Harbour Beach and Little Cove. Harbour Beach serves as the working harbor, surrounded by traditional cottages, while Little Cove is noted as being better for swimming and snorkeling. The rocky outcrop known as The Todden separates these two beaches and offers scenic views.
Beyond its role in the series, Cadgwith offers several attractions for visitors. The South West Coast Path is accessible for coastal walks, and the Lizard Peninsula, including Lizard Point, is nearby. The village also hosts Crowsnest, a small art gallery showcasing local artists with a focus on fishing and nautical themes.
The upcoming series is based on J.K. Rowling's first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." Previous film adaptations of the Harry Potter series have utilized notable UK landmarks, including Oxford's Bodleian Library and King's Cross Station.
