Claudia Winkleman has decided to step away from her BBC chat show, "The Claudia Winkleman Show," after just one season, stating that she was "just too nervous to enjoy it." The program, which premiered in March with significant anticipation, garnered healthy ratings and generally positive reviews from critics. Following the first season, Winkleman was offered a second series by the BBC.
Despite the offer, Winkleman, who is also known for hosting "Strictly Come Dancing" and "The Traitors," reflected on the experience. "Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it," she stated. She expressed gratitude to the BBC, her guests, and the production team.
Ed Havard, Director of Entertainment at the BBC, acknowledged Winkleman's decision, saying, "Claudia’s warmth and quick wit made The Claudia Winkleman Show an absolute joy. Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision." He confirmed Winkleman would return to the BBC for a new series of "Celebrity Traitors" later this year.
The seven-part chat show aired on Friday nights and was produced by So Television. Some commentary suggested the show struggled to connect due to Winkleman's perceived "niceness," while others pointed to a historical challenge for female chat show hosts in connecting with guests and audiences. In a pre-show interview, Winkleman herself expressed uncertainty about her suitability for the role, telling the Daily Mail's Weekend magazine that she lacked "curiosity and vim."
Her guests on the show included Jeff Goldblum, Vanessa Williams, Jennifer Saunders, Dan Levy, Tom Allen, and Josh Widdicombe. While some reviews, like The Guardian's two-star assessment calling the first episode "a mess," were mixed, The Telegraph noted her "national treasure status" despite apparent opening-night nerves. By the end of the series, some observers felt Winkleman had found her rhythm.
Winkleman continues to host "The Traitors" and its celebrity spin-off, as well as "The Piano" on Channel 4. She also participated in Channel 4's coverage of Crufts. She and Tess Daly concluded their long-standing roles as hosts of "Strictly Come Dancing" last year after two decades, stating it was simply time to move on.
