Christopher Chung, who plays Harry in the Netflix period drama "My Brilliant Career," has offered a behind-the-scenes look at the show's now-discussed bullwhip scene. The moment, featured in Episode 2, involves Harry teaching Sybylla Melvyn, portrayed by Philippa Northeast, how to use a bullwhip, leading to a charged interaction.

Chung explained that he learned to crack a whip specifically for the role, describing the skill as being "all in the wrist." He noted the satisfaction of achieving the correct "earth-shattering sound." The scene escalates when Harry asks Sybylla if she trusts him and proceeds to crack the whip near her feet, a moment that is later mirrored by Sybylla's private actions. "I think that moment…is very important and special to the two of them," Chung stated.

The actor revealed that this particular scene was among the first he shot with Northeast. "We had to find that chemistry very, very quickly," Chung said. "But we were both really game to make sure that we did these characters justice." He added that the director, Alyssa McClelland, had explained the intended visual direction, making them aware that the scene was designed to be "very suggestive" and suitable for use in montages later in the series. "We kind of knew what the moment had to be charged with," Chung recalled, emphasizing that starting their collaboration with such an intense scene helped alleviate any potential awkwardness.

"My Brilliant Career" follows Sybylla Melvyn, a young woman invited to stay at a wealthy estate to foster her writing career and avoid marriage. While there, she develops a strong connection with the estate owner's nephew, Harry. The series is available to stream on Netflix.
