Christian YouTuber Daniel Maritz Releases Biblical Fantasy Novel, Critiques Modern Media

Bible teacher and popular YouTuber Daniel Maritz has co-authored a biblical fantasy novel, "Lightborn: Dawn of Darkness," which he describes as the first in a saga set in a world before the biblical flood, blending ancient history and mythology.

The novel's protagonist, Uldako, begins life as a slave and embarks on a journey to uncover truths about his world, heritage, and a legendary conflict known as the war behind all wars. His path involves survival against beasts, dealing with loss, and following an ancient prophecy concerning the Lightborn.

Maritz, along with his brother Hernu, plans to develop a companion video game based on the novel through their company, Ruach Entertainment. Maritz stated that both the book and the planned game are intended to reflect current trends in culture and entertainment, noting that the story, despite its ancient setting, remains relevant.

"There is not only a battle between light and darkness in Hollywood, but also in education, religion, and culture in general," Maritz told Fox News Digital. He expressed concern that modern entertainment, citing shows like "Game of Thrones," often includes excessive vulgarity and violence, which he believes distracts from the positive aspects of fantasy storytelling. He advocates for narratives that offer heroes and adventures inspiring a "higher ethos."

Maritz, originally from South Africa, has spoken about personal tragedies, including the deaths of two brothers. He recounted an experience in a hospital that led him to create stories that draw on biblical lessons, aiming to offer an alternative to what he perceives as a saturation of violence and darkness in contemporary media.

He draws inspiration from classic Christian allegories such as C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia" and J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings." Maritz believes society has become addicted to entertainment that emphasizes the "evil side" and that this influences culture through media, politics, and education. He expressed a sentiment that people are increasingly weary of this trend, particularly when familiar stories are altered in ways that deviate from their original intent.

Maritz, who also runs YouTube channels like DLM Christian Lifestyle and DLM Christian Perspective, sees video games as a significant medium for storytelling, with a global audience of 3.5 billion players. He aims for the "Lightborn" video game to offer an alternative to more violent games, emphasizing the potential to share the Gospel within this influential industry.

"To every storyteller reading this: The desire for wonder without wreckage is enormous. We need to craft worlds worth losing ourselves in for an afternoon, with heroes worth following into the dark because we trust they’re going to lead us back into the light," Maritz wrote in a recent opinion piece. He suggests that creators should question whether their stories encourage fighting evil or practicing it, and whether they expose darkness or train audiences to embrace it.
