Chris Rock on Hollywood: 'So Many Dreams Die'
The comedian discussed the harsh realities of pursuing fame in Los Angeles during a talk show appearance.
Chris Rock has offered a stark perspective on the pursuit of dreams in Hollywood, describing Los Angeles as a place where "so many dreams die." The comedian shared these reflections during an appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" to promote his upcoming film, "Misty Green."
Rock, who stars in and directs "Misty Green," noted that the movie's story about an actress moving to Los Angeles to chase her ambitions and finding a difficult path resonates with his own experiences. He recalled being struck by the city's beauty upon his arrival, but also observed the pervasive presence of homelessness, even in upscale areas like Rodeo Drive.
"Everybody you meet there had grand plans," Rock stated, "but LA will send you home."
He elaborated on the often-misunderstood nature of success in the entertainment industry, explaining that landing a role on television does not guarantee lasting financial security. Rock mentioned that residuals from his time on "Saturday Night Live" are now as small as nine cents, illustrating the fluctuating nature of income in the industry.
Rock began his comedy career as a teenager in New York City before gaining national recognition as a cast member on "SNL" from 1990 to 1993. His 1996 special, "Bring the Pain," marked a significant turning point, earning critical acclaim and an Emmy Award. Over the decades, he has established himself as a prominent figure in comedy, with multiple Emmy and Grammy Awards, and has also developed a career in acting, writing, and directing. "Misty Green," set for release on October 9, marks his return to feature filmmaking.
