Cheryl Returns to The Voice UK in Surprise Early Appearance
The singer joins Will.i.am as a guest mentor ahead of her confirmed 2027 coaching role, amidst controversy over Sir Tom Jones's departure.
Cheryl made a surprise early appearance on The Voice UK during the Battle Rounds, joining long-time friend Will.i.am as his guest mentor. This unexpected return comes ahead of her official confirmation as a coach for the 2027 series, where she will replace Sir Tom Jones.
During her appearance, Cheryl offered guidance to contestants, drawing on her own experience as a performer. "I’ve stood in the shoes that the contestants are standing in," she stated. "I know what it feels like to perform in this environment. You’ve just got to know that you’re good or you wouldn’t be here." She expressed confidence in Will.i.am's ability to guide the artists, noting their extensive history of collaboration. "Will and I have collaborated a lot over the years so we know what it’s like for two very different artists to come together."
The singer's appearance on the current season has been overshadowed by controversy surrounding the departure of veteran coach Sir Tom Jones. While Cheryl was announced as his replacement for 2027, Jones has stated that he did not want to leave the show and was reportedly informed of ITV's decision due to financial difficulties with insurance.
In a statement, ITV thanked Jones for his contributions over nine years, saying they continued to discuss his involvement in future series. However, sources suggest that Will.i.am is unhappy with how Sir Tom's exit was handled, creating an awkward atmosphere on set. "It's pretty uncomfortable for Cheryl, who is close with Will and has looked up to Kelly all her career," a source told The Sun. "This is her big TV comeback and right now ITV are letting her be the fall guy for taking Sir Tom's seat."
Cheryl's return to television marks a notable comeback after a period away from the spotlight. Alongside Cheryl and a confirmed appearance by Aitch, it has also been reported that Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon will take over hosting duties from Emma Willis, who is moving to present Strictly Come Dancing.
