Celine Dion Greets Fans in Paris Amid Health Battle
The iconic singer, diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, expressed her gratitude and determination during her Paris residency opening.
Celine Dion, 58, appeared in high spirits as she greeted a large crowd of fans outside her hotel in Paris on Wednesday. The singer is in the French capital for a five-week residency, marking her return to the stage after canceling the remainder of her "Courage" world tour in 2023 due to her health.
Last weekend, Dion shared an emotional message during the opening night of her Paris residency, stating she has decided to make her "devastating health battle my reason for living." Diagnosed in December 2022 with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a condition causing muscle stiffness and painful spasms, Dion's health had previously impacted her ability to walk and sing.
During her performance, Dion spoke about her difficult journey. "I have to admit, though, that the road was rocky. The journey was longer than expected, with unplanned stops along the way," she said. "But I hung in there. A faint ray of light in the distance, deep in the mountains. I believed in it. And here it is. The sun – the sun is here. The sun, right in front of me."
She continued, thanking her fans for their unwavering support and patience. "I have promised myself to be back on stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing live! Thank you so very much for your support, your patience and if I may say so, I am everything I am because you loved me," she stated in English.
Dion described SPS as a "progressive condition" and shared that she has come to terms with it. "By living with it day in and day out, I've come to terms with it. And I've decided to make it my reason for living," she revealed.
The singer has undergone an intense rehabilitation program, including new medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Her regimen includes 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week, twice-weekly ballet and barre classes, and use of a home gym with weights, a treadmill, and a reformer machine to improve her strength and flexibility.
Dion's candid experience with the condition was further detailed in her 2024 documentary, "I Am: Celine Dion."
Despite the challenges, Dion has recently appeared in good spirits while interacting with her fans in Paris. The current residency is scheduled for 16 shows in the autumn of 2026, with an additional 10 dates planned for May 2027.
