Celebrity Traitors Producers Alter Plans After Unforeseen 'Unthinkable' Event

Producers of the BBC reality competition show Celebrity Traitors have reportedly been compelled to alter their production plans following an "unthinkable" incident during filming. The event is described as more chaotic than a previous notable gaffe by actor Richard E. Grant.

The show's recent cliffhanger ending, which saw the second episode abruptly conclude mid-round table discussion, left viewers frustrated and eagerly anticipating the next installment. This planned suspense is a common tactic by the show's creators to maintain audience engagement throughout the week.

However, sources indicate that an "unbelievable" event occurred that "even execs didn't see it coming," necessitating a revision of planned sequences. "Cliffhangers on The Traitors have become legendary so bosses never want to disappoint and hope to have the nation on tenterhooks all week, waiting for Thursdays to come around – that's part of the reason the format being fed out twice a week works," a source told The Sun. "So they plot out likely moments in gameplay that will be the Friday cliffs." But after this recent event, "bosses were 'forced to throw plans out the window to accommodate the epic moment – which should make great TV'."

During the initial round table of the season, tensions escalated as the celebrity contestants debated whether Richard E. Grant was a Faithful or a Traitor. Grant had made a significant misstep by admitting he was a Traitor, a confession that has put him under intense scrutiny. The episode concluded abruptly with host Claudia Winkleman announcing, "Players the time for talk is over," leaving viewers unable to see who the contestants would vote to banish.

In an earlier part of the episode, former Today programme host Amol Rajan was eliminated. He was murdered by Traitors Richard E. Grant and Maya Jama. Viewers later discovered that Rajan, not comedian James Acaster, was chosen to be the third Traitor but ultimately lost out. Rajan expressed his disappointment at his early exit, stating, "It's just an absolutely unforgettable ride of a lifetime. And honestly, there's kind of an unhappy contrast right now, because I'm sort of grieving what might have been. In time I know that I'll come to look on this as honestly one of the greatest privileges of my life."

The first two episodes of Celebrity Traitors have proven to be a significant success, with the launch episode attracting a record-breaking nine million viewers. This figure surpasses previous season premieres for The Traitors UK. The overnight ratings show the first episode peaked at just over nine million and averaged 8.9 million viewers, an increase from both the previous celebrity series and the last non-celebrity series. The total viewership is expected to rise further with the inclusion of iPlayer streams.

The show's audience numbers also exceeded those of the first live show of Strictly Come Dancing, which saw a decline in viewership compared to the previous year. The current season of Celebrity Traitors features 20 contestants competing in Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands for a charity prize of up to £100,000.

The second mission involved contestants being buried alive in pairs in a graveyard setting. Jerry Hall opted out of the challenge by using the code word 'haggis', resulting in her and her partner Hannah Fry being up for potential murder. Hall described the experience as "really scary" and "like being in a horror movie."

The first roundtable discussion focused heavily on Richard E. Grant's confession. "Let's be frank, you are celebrities. You are very successful. When you speak, people listen. You might find that slightly different here," Winkleman told the group. "At this roundtable there is no VIP treatment. There are no riders, there is no fluffing. If you hit a rough patch, you definitely cannot call your agent."

Contestants like Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh and comedian Romesh Ranganathan acknowledged the difficulty of the situation created by Grant's open admission. Viewer reactions on social media platform X highlighted surprise and debate over whether Grant would survive the round table, with many finding his early confession highly entertaining despite its strategic implications for the game.
