Carrie Episode 2 Explores Power Dynamics and Social Isolation

The second episode of the new 'Carrie' series, titled "Foreign Language," directed by Mike Flanagan and written by Elizabeth Padden, explores the developing psychic abilities of Carrietta White and the oppressive forces that shape her life. The episode introduces the concept of "hysterical strength" before pivoting to Carrie's own nascent powers, which manifest subtly as she navigates interactions with school authorities and her increasingly controlling mother.

Carrie finds herself in Principal Grayle's office alongside Miss Desjardin following an incident. Despite pressure, Carrie remains tight-lipped, demonstrating an early intuition about loyalty and self-preservation. She receives guidance on menstruation and safe sex, but her primary concern is preventing her mother from learning about the events at school. On her walk home, Carrie inadvertently discovers her telekinetic abilities when mailboxes begin to open as she passes.

Meanwhile, the social dynamics of the school are depicted through a video documenting Carrie's humiliation. Sue Snell, whose boyfriend Tommy is troubled by the cruelty shown to Carrie, coins the nickname "Carrie Red." Later, Sue and Tommy share a moment, with Tommy differentiating between making a joke and direct torment.

Margaret White's struggles outside the home are highlighted through her interactions at a grocery store. Her rigid adherence to religious principles leads to conflicts with customers and her manager, who assigns her to maintenance work. These external pressures seem to amplify her controlling behavior towards Carrie.

During dinner, Carrie attempts to discuss her mother's fears about outside influences, but Margaret deflects, framing her own control as protection against a cruel world. However, Margaret discovers the educational pamphlets Carrie received, labeling them "pornography" and punishing Carrie by confining her to a prayer closet with a hard ruler. She learns about the locker room incident, prompting Principal Grayle to insist on empowering Carrie with information.

Miss Desjardin is shown socializing with colleagues Seth and Peter, where she encounters the volatile Billy Nolan. Later, Miss Desjardin confides her desire to "wake up" Carrie before harsher forces do, expressing a complex mix of frustration and a protective instinct. She intervenes in gym class, demanding an end to the torment and privately asking Sue to look out for Carrie.

Carrie finds a confidant in Mr. Morton, the guidance counselor, who engages her in discussions about literature. Through their conversation, featuring quotes from works like 'Great Expectations' and 'A Wrinkle in Time,' Morton encourages Carrie to embrace her individuality. Carrie reveals her visions of her father and other phenomena, acknowledging her perceived abnormality. Morton consoles her, suggesting these experiences are a response to grief.

Morton takes Carrie to the school library, an environment that evokes awe in her. Her discovery of her mother meeting with Principal Grayle causes a telekinetic tremor that disrupts a stack of books.

In the restroom, Carrie experiences a bloody nose, and her reflection cracks the mirror. She confronts a peer, Emaline, who admits to spying on her, revealing that Carrie "stole her thunder" by drawing attention. Emaline shares advice: "You have all the power. They can only hurt you if you let them."

Chris experiences friction at home during a dinner with her mother, Heather Graham, and her mother's new partner, Kent Kirby, and his daughter, Brooklyn. Chris rejects the notion of them being a family and is warned to leave Brooklyn alone.

Sue confronts Chris about the locker room incident, but Chris dismisses her remorse. Chris, however, creates a new Instagram account, "Carrie Red," and uploads the video, using a screenshot of Carrie's face as the profile picture and adding drops of blood to the bio.

Carrie confronts her mother about visiting the principal. When Margaret refuses to apologize, Carrie retreats to her room, where her growing powers manifest by slamming and latching the door shut with her mind. The episode concludes with Carrie embracing Emaline's advice: "You have all the power."
