Dogs took to the waves Saturday at Pacifica’s shoreline for the annual World Dog Surfing Championships, drawing hundreds of spectators to watch the canine competitors. Dogs of various breeds and sizes, equipped with life vests and riding brightly colored surfboards, navigated the ocean waves.

Judges evaluated the dogs based on factors such as their time on the board, the size of the waves they rode, and their overall confidence. Handlers assisted the dogs in catching waves, with volunteers at the shoreline ready to catch them as they dismounted.

The event also featured a pet adoption drive and fundraising efforts for animal charities. Organizers have called the competition the “premier dog surfing event in the World.”

One participant, Rusty, a Miniature Pinscher, began surfing at four months old. His owner, Sophia Sadlowski, recalled placing him on a surfboard for photos, after which he showed a strong inclination to stay on the board and ride waves. Sadlowski also noted that Rusty had previously battled cancer, a challenge they both overcame.

The competition included heats for small, medium, and large dogs, culminating in a face-off for the top prize. A tandem competition, where humans and dogs shared surfboards, was also part of the event.

Pacifica is located approximately 16 miles south of San Francisco in San Mateo County.
