Bronx Zoo Welcomes New Snow Leopard Cub
Four-month-old Sarka, a member of a vulnerable species, is now viewable at the Himalayan Highlands exhibit.
The Bronx Zoo has announced the arrival of a new snow leopard cub named Sarka, who is now on public display. The four-month-old cub, whose species is considered vulnerable to extinction, can be seen at the zoo's Himalayan Highlands exhibit.
Sarka was born on May 31 to parents Dariga and Moutig. Zoo officials stated that she is actively exploring her habitat and interacting with other snow leopards in adjacent exhibits. Footage released by the zoo shows the young cub playfully navigating rocks and receiving attention from her mother.
The Bronx Zoo is home to eight snow leopards. These animals are native to the high-altitude regions of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas in Asia. Globally, an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 snow leopards remain in the wild. Their populations face threats from habitat degradation, poaching, and conflict with livestock herders.
