Brad Pitt Stars in Survival Thriller 'Heart of the Beast,' 'Sense and Sensibility' Adaptation Receives Mixed Reviews

The survival thriller "Heart of the Beast" features Brad Pitt as a former Special Forces soldier navigating a harsh Alaskan wilderness with his German Shepherd, Odin. The film, directed by David Ayer, focuses on the man and his dog's struggle against nature and the aftermath of warfare, with Pitt's character, James Belmont, and Odin, a combat dog with a prosthetic leg, haunted by memories of their service.
Odin is portrayed by a dog named Uber, whose performance has been highlighted as a standout. The narrative centers on James and Odin's arrival in Alaska for salmon fishing and solitude, which is disrupted by an encounter with another rugged adventurer played by J.K. Simmons. However, the primary antagonist is Mother Nature, presenting challenges such as storms, bears, and wolves. The plot takes a critical turn when James suffers a heart attack after a plane crash, forcing him to trek 58 miles back to civilization with only Odin and limited supplies.
Critics have noted the film's stunning scenery and spectacular camerawork. Brian Viner of the Daily Mail awarded "Heart of the Beast" four out of five stars, describing it as a "gripping tale of survival" and "stirring stuff" reminiscent of classic Disney films about animal perseverance. Pitt's performance is considered a strong fit for the rugged role, potentially serving as an antidote to recent public family turmoil.
In contrast, a new adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" has received a more muted response, earning two out of five stars from Viner. The film, directed by Georgia Oakley and adapted by Diana Reid, attempts to modernize the classic novel but is criticized for losing Austen's characteristic nuance and subtlety. The review notes that the burgeoning feelings between Elinor Dashwood, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Edward Ferrars, portrayed by George MacKay, are too overtly expressed, unlike the restrained nature of Austen's original work. The casting of Norwegian actor Herbert Nordrum as the quintessentially English Colonel Brandon also draws criticism.
Despite these reservations, the adaptation is visually appealing, with interior shots described as resembling Old Master paintings. Fiona Shaw is singled out for her scene-stealing performance as Mrs. Jennings. However, the film is ultimately deemed unlikely to leave a lasting impression.
