Billie Eilish Ditches Long Black Hair for Strawberry Blonde Bob
The 24-year-old singer debuted a dramatic new hairstyle on Instagram, drawing praise from fans.
Billie Eilish surprised fans on Thursday by unveiling a new short strawberry blonde bob in an Instagram post. The 24-year-old singer ditched her signature long black hair for the striking transformation.
Eilish accompanied the video reveal with audio from the 1994 Pavement song "Cut Your Hair." The post quickly garnered a wave of positive comments, with fans describing the new look as "Obsessed," "perfect," and "It suits you so well!!!"
The singer's new hairstyle comes after a period of intense work filming "The Bell Jar," where she is set to make her acting debut. In the film, Eilish portrays Esther Greenwood, a 19-year-old college student who experiences a downward spiral into depression after accepting a magazine internship in New York City in 1953.
The notes for the film's production indicate Eilish was seen in August engrossed in her role, sporting an attire that evoked a past era. This contrasts with her public persona, often characterized by loose-fitting clothing, a style she has previously explained stems from experiencing "gender euphoria." Eilish has shared that her oversized fashion choices, frequently incorporating men's apparel, helped her navigate a past "toxic relationship with my body" and "eating issues."
She has cited hip-hop artists Missy Elliott and Tyler, The Creator as style influences, and her aesthetic has also been shaped by a "love for hip-hop culture and wanting to be a man," which she linked to a desire to avoid being perceived as feminine and weak. Eilish has found a way to reconcile these feelings, stating, "I've found a good way of not feeling like that."
"The Bell Jar" marks director Sarah Polley's fifth feature film. Carey Mulligan is also attached to the cast as Eilish's mother, and Connor Storrie is rumored to have a role as well. Sylvia Plath's novel, on which the film is based, is considered semi-autobiographical and deals with themes of depression, societal pressures, and identity. Plath herself had a similar internship experience in 1953 before experiencing mental health struggles, ultimately dying by suicide at age 30.
