Ashe's "Stop the Wedding" Finds Global Success by Confronting Past Trauma
The US singer-songwriter's hit song, inspired by a difficult first marriage, has resonated with millions worldwide, climbing charts and dominating TikTok.
US singer-songwriter Ashe has achieved global recognition with her song "Stop the Wedding," a powerful anthem born from her experiences with emotional abuse and manipulation during a previous marriage. The track, released in August, has become one of the most played songs on Spotify and reached the top five of the UK singles chart, while also becoming a viral sensation on TikTok.
Ashe, whose full name is Ashlyn Rae Willson, drew inspiration for the song during her second wedding ceremony last October. Reflecting on a past marriage from nearly a decade prior, which she described as "horrifying" and characterized by emotional manipulation, she contrasted it with her current healthy relationship. The experience of feeling empowered to leave the second wedding if necessary, unlike her inability to do so the first time, sparked the idea for the song.
"Stop the Wedding" narrates a scene where the singer pleads with her younger self to trust her instincts and avoid a life of unhappiness. Ashe expressed a wish for such advice during her first marriage, stating it could have led her to change things sooner. While she didn't literally burn her wedding dress, she humorously recalled a photoshoot in it after her divorce, which ruined the garment.
This success comes after a period of significant personal and professional challenges for Ashe. Three years prior, she nearly abandoned her music career following a nervous breakdown in 2023. After the death of her brother in 2020, she continued touring despite experiencing panic attacks and struggling to embody her public persona. She stepped away from showbusiness for six months, focusing on therapy and a quieter life in Nashville, which ultimately rekindled her passion for music.
Ashe's musical journey began in San Jose, California, where she grew up in a conservative household. Her early exposure to rock music from her grandfather, alongside her studies in orchestral composition at Boston's Berklee College of Music, laid the foundation for her career. Initially working as a songwriter, she found frustration in others performing her lyrics. She eventually launched her solo career as Ashe, a decision met with discouragement from her then-husband.
Her 2019 single "Moral of the Story," which gained prominence after being featured in the Netflix series "To All the Boys: PS I Still Love You," achieved over one billion streams. Despite this growing success, the pressures of touring and professional demands led to her breakdown. Her recent album, "Wilson," released in 2024, is a deeply confessional work, followed by a collaboration with Finneas O'Connell as The Favors and a new deal with Atlantic Records.
Ashe is approaching the success of "Stop the Wedding" with a newfound sense of groundedness, focusing on emotional well-being alongside professional achievements. Her new album, "Girl of Your Dreams," scheduled for release on October 16, embraces a maximalist approach with lush orchestrations and experimental sounds, aiming to break away from conventional music. The album explores themes of tumultuous relationships, personal possessiveness, and ultimately, finding true love, concluding with a celebratory tone reflecting her current happiness with musician John Clark Canada.
