Anne Carson Awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature
Canadian poet and writer recognized for her 'bold and inventive oeuvre' that blends genres and engages with classical tradition.
Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced Thursday. Carson, 76, received the honor for her "bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature," according to the Academy.
Carson's work is known for its genre-defying mix of verse, prose, dialogue, and translation, often drawing inspiration from classical Greek literature. "All she had time to tell me was that she is for the moment in Iceland, where she’s listening to the wind," said Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, detailing Carson's surprised reaction to the news.
Her literary output includes verse novels such as "Autobiography of Red" (1998), a performance piece titled "Norma Jeane Baker of Troy" (2019) that intertwines the stories of Helen of Troy with Marilyn Monroe, and "The Albertine Workout," which explores themes from Marcel Proust's "In Search of Lost Time."
The Academy noted that Carson identifies the etymology of words as the starting point for her work, and her translations from Classical Greek are considered significant works in themselves. "Genre is something for booksellers. It’s something you do in order to appeal to an audience and make them buy books. And on what shelf do you put Anne Carson’s books? It’s on a shelf of her own," commented Steve Sem-Sandberg, a member of the award committee.
Carson, who was born in Toronto and has a home in Iceland, has also taught classics at universities in both Canada and the United States. She views herself as both a visual artist and a literary one, describing the process of making a poem as creating an object. "I think of making a poem as making an object. I have always thought of them more as drawings than as texts, but drawings that are also physically enterable through the fact of language," she said in a 2016 interview.
In recent years, Carson has also taken up boxing as a therapy for Parkinson's disease, a diagnosis she received in her 70s. She reflected in 2024 on the disease's impact on her handwriting, stating, "I scrub out whole paragraphs in shame ... the shame of bad handwriting."
Established in the will of Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Prizes have been awarded since 1901. The literature prize is the fourth of this year's Nobel awards, following those for medicine, physics, and chemistry. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish crowns ($1.2 million).
