Animated Feature Race at Oscars Promises Fierce Competition

The race for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature is shaping up to be one of the most competitive and open categories this year, with a mix of established franchises and independent productions vying for attention.

Among the potential frontrunners is Laika's stop-motion film 'Wildwood,' set for release on Oct. 23. Directed by Travis Knight, the film follows a teenager's journey into a magical forest to rescue her brother. Laika has a strong track record with the Academy, having earned nominations for all five of its previous films, including 'Coraline' and 'Missing Link.' Awards pundits have identified 'Wildwood' as an early contender.

An insider noted that Laika's status as one of the few independent animation studios in the U.S. that is likely operating at a financial loss could garner support. "It’s almost charity work — they’re employing so many people and keeping this industry alive, and people want to support that," the source said.

'Wildwood's' mature themes and PG-13 rating suggest a departure from animation typically aimed at younger children. This trend is also evident in other potential contenders.

Brad Bird, a two-time Oscar winner known for Pixar hits like 'The Incredibles' and 'Ratatouille,' is expected to contend with his latest directorial effort, 'Ray Gunn.' This stylish noir detective thriller, starring Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson, is slated for a Dec. 18 release on Netflix and will have an awards-qualifying run. Bird's established reputation in the animation industry makes 'Ray Gunn' a near-certain nominee.

Pixar is also expected to heavily campaign for 'Toy Story 5.' The franchise has a strong history at the Oscars, with 'Toy Story 3' and 'Toy Story 4' both winning Best Animated Feature. However, the studio's focus on 'Toy Story 5' may sideline other projects, such as 'Hoppers,' a beaver-centric film that has reportedly faded from awards discussions.

DreamWorks is set to push its film 'Forgotten Island,' a story inspired by Filipino folklore. Despite its potential, low box office tracking could impact its longevity in the awards race.

British animation studio Aardman Animations is also expected to be a contender with 'Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.' The 'Shaun the Sheep' franchise has previously earned Oscar nominations, and the continued popularity of its creator, Nick Park, a celebrated figure in the UK, could boost its chances. 'Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl' won a BAFTA in 2024.

International productions also feature in the awards landscape, including the French-Belgian film 'Iron Boy' and 'Julián,' a co-production involving Ireland, Canada, Denmark, Luxembourg, and the UK. These international entries often attract attention from Academy voters, particularly those within the animation branch, adding an element of unpredictability to the nominations.

The category, first awarded in 2002, has a history of recognizing both blockbuster successes and more unconventional, artistic entries.
