A significant wildfire in southern France has prompted the evacuation of more than 10,000 residents from over a dozen towns and villages in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, near the Spanish border. The blaze, centered in Trévillach near Perpignan, has consumed at least 4,600 hectares (11,366 acres).
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that conditions for fighting the fire were worsening, with authorities anticipating strong winds that could further fuel the flames. Residents described the fire's rapid spread, with one individual from Trévillach reporting it came within 300 meters (984 feet) of homes, causing alarm.
The encroaching wildfire has also impacted the Tour de France. Organizers have urged spectators and non-essential personnel to stay away from the final 40 kilometers and the finish site of the third stage of the cycling race, which concludes in Les Angles in the Pyrénées-Orientales region. This measure is intended to ensure clear access for emergency vehicles.
The region has been experiencing an early summer heatwave, which has contributed to the current dry conditions and the intensity of the wildfire. Satellite imagery has shown the stark impact of prolonged heatwaves, turning lush landscapes brown.
