The United Kingdom is on course to experience its hottest summer on record in 2026, according to the Met Office, as exceptionally warm and sunny conditions persist. This prolonged heat has led to drought declarations across more than two-thirds of England and the entirety of Wales.
Drought conditions now affect approximately 45 million people in England, with over 27 million individuals facing water usage restrictions. Forecasts indicate no significant rainfall for most of the current week across England and Wales. However, there are some indications of rain arriving from the Atlantic by Sunday, potentially bringing the first substantial rainfall many have seen in nearly two months, though it is not expected to be heavy or persistent.
To break the existing record, set just last year, only average weather conditions are required for the remainder of August. The ongoing heatwave has resulted in parched landscapes, with aerial views showing vast tracts of yellow, dead fields and cracked, dry earth.
The dry conditions have transformed parks and natural areas into brown, arid expanses.
