New regulations in Britain now permit the sale of plug-in solar panels, a move aimed at enabling more households to generate their own electricity and reduce energy bills. However, widespread availability from major retailers is not immediate, with many expected to stock the devices in the coming months. \n\nArgos is currently the sole major retailer offering plug-in solar panels, with prices ranging from £599 to £989 for various kits. These kits are not suitable for balconies. Customers purchasing from Argos online or in-store will experience delivery delays, with orders not expected to arrive until October. \n\nOther prominent retailers, including B&Q, Lidl, Wickes, and Amazon, have indicated that the panels will become available at a later date. B&Q anticipates having the panels in stock around October, emphasizing a commitment to ensuring the products are safe, compliant, and user-friendly. Amazon stated its readiness to help customers benefit from the technology, while Currys has not yet set a launch date. \n\nAccording to government figures, nearly 172,000 solar installations have been completed across Britain since the start of 2026, with rooftop solar accounting for over 70% of installations in July. Energy minister Michael Shanks highlighted the growing adoption of solar power by households and the government's Warm Homes Plan to make rooftop solar more accessible. He noted that the introduction of plug-in solar panels aims to make it easier for families to participate in the "solar revolution."
