The increasing frequency of heatwaves in the UK is prompting a closer look at the necessity and cost of air conditioning for homes. While traditionally less common than in other climates, the growing demand suggests it may become a more permanent feature.

Portable air conditioning units represent the most affordable option, with prices typically ranging from £350 to £650, depending on the brand and performance. Some retailers have offered these units at lower prices, such as £149, during periods of high demand.

For more integrated cooling solutions, wall-mounted or split air conditioning units can cost between £750 and £1,100 for the unit itself. However, these figures do not include installation, which can significantly increase the total cost. Professional installation, including connection to the home's electrical systems, can bring the total price to between £2,000 and £3,500. For multi-room installations, costs can escalate up to £6,000.

Ducted air conditioning systems are the most expensive option before installation, costing between £990 and £1,750. The complexity of fitting ducting and concealing it within properties makes installation more labor-intensive and costly than other systems. Heatable estimates that full installation for ducted systems can range from £5,000 to £10,000, depending on the property's size, layout, and the intricacy of the ductwork required.

The capacity of both split and ducted units is measured in British Thermal Units (BTU). A higher BTU rating indicates the unit's ability to cool larger spaces, which generally correlates with a higher price.

Running costs for air conditioning systems vary considerably. According to consumer group Which?, a typical portable air conditioner can add approximately 25p to 40p per hour to electricity bills.
