Wildfires are continuing to burn across the United Kingdom, placing significant pressure on fire services. Major incidents were declared over the weekend in North Wales and in Glossop, Derbyshire, in the Peak District.
In North Wales, the major incident declared over a wildfire in Conwy has been brought under control. However, firefighters are still working to extinguish several active blazes, including those near Bethesda and in the Rhinogydd mountain range. A farmer whose land borders Conwy Mountain described the scale of the fire as "unreal," noting that while grazing ponies escaped, he had concerns for neighboring pigs due to the smoke. The animals ultimately survived.
Elsewhere, approximately 30 to 40 firefighters remain engaged at a large moorland fire on Tintwistle Moor, near Dovestone Reservoir in the Peak District. This blaze, which began on June 24, has consumed an estimated 260 hectares (642 acres) of moorland and woodland.
Senior fire officials have warned that crews face a "very challenging and grueling day ahead" due to the continuing high temperatures, strong winds, and dry conditions that exacerbate the wildfires. The public has been urged to exercise increased caution in rural areas to minimize the risk of further ignitions.
Authorities arrested a 20-year-old woman on suspicion of arson following reports of fireworks being set off in the vicinity of one of the fires.
