Much of the United Kingdom is bracing for its fifth heatwave of the year as temperatures are forecast to climb again, potentially extending drought conditions, particularly in England. This follows a period of warmer weather with temperatures reaching the mid to high twenties Celsius on Sunday.
Rising Temperatures and Heatwave Thresholds
After a cooler spell on Monday, temperatures are expected to rise across the UK from Tuesday. Scotland and Northern Ireland will see typical highs in the low to mid-twenties Celsius. In England and Wales, temperatures are predicted to climb into the mid to high twenties, with central, eastern, and southern England, as well as parts of east Wales, likely to exceed 30C.
The heat is anticipated to peak on Thursday, with potential readings of 35C in southeast England. If this temperature is reached, it would mark the fourth consecutive month with temperatures of 35C or higher being recorded. The threshold for an official heatwave is likely to be met widely across England and Wales.
Health Alerts and Drought Concerns
Yellow heat health alerts are currently in effect for most of England until 9:00 PM BST on Tuesday. These alerts warn of potential impacts on health and social care services and highlight an increased risk of harm to vulnerable individuals. These advisories are expected to be updated as heatwave conditions develop.
With no significant rainfall forecast for the coming week, more areas of England are at risk of being officially declared in drought status. The dry conditions are evident in landscapes across the country, with depleted reservoirs and parched fields becoming increasingly common.
