A wildfire that raged across Suffolk's coastal heathland has been stabilized, but fire crews remain on site to manage persistent hotspots. The blaze, which began Wednesday evening, consumed approximately 150 hectares at its peak, an area equivalent to 210 football pitches.
The fire affected Dunwich Heath and the RSPB Minsmere nature reserve. Video footage from the scene has revealed the extent of the damage to the natural landscape.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Henry Griffin of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service stated that high winds and temperatures continue to present challenges. Despite the fire being stabilized, it remains a dynamic incident with multiple reignitions occurring. Firefighters are actively working to extinguish these flare-ups.
