Storm Eloise Triggers Widespread Disruption Across Scotland
High winds and heavy rainfall cause damage, road closures, and coastal erosion.
Storm Eloise has brought severe weather conditions to Scotland, with strong winds and heavy rain causing significant disruption across the country. Coastal areas have been particularly affected, experiencing rough seas and flooding.
Images from affected regions show waves crashing over sea walls, with debris, including seaweed and plastic barriers, strewn across paths and roads. In Largs, material washed ashore by the rough sea covered a wet path next to benches. Balmedie beach experienced strong onshore winds, whipping spray off the waves, with offshore wind turbines visible on the horizon.
The storm's impact has led to road closures in some areas, with police setting up signs and cones on country roads at night due to hazardous conditions. Floodwater has been observed covering roads under bridges, further impeding travel. In one instance, a leafy tree was seen lying across a road in a housing development, likely felled by the high winds.
Coastal erosion and damage to property have also been reported. A caravan was seen smashed up on a road, and a blue-hulled sailing boat was left resting against a wall in Gourock. The severe weather has impacted coastlines and harbors, with couples seen observing the rough seas from the entrance to Nairn harbour.
The storm's passage has left a trail of destruction, highlighting the vulnerability of coastal and low-lying areas to extreme weather events.
