Storm Austen Brings Heavy Rain and Wind to Scotland
Yellow rain warnings are in effect for parts of Scotland as the first of two named storms causes potential disruption.
Scotland is bracing for the impact of Storm Austen, which is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong winds across the country over the weekend. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain, primarily affecting most of central and eastern Scotland on Friday.
Train services may experience speed restrictions in certain areas due to the adverse weather. Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, emphasized that safety is paramount. "We know any disruption from these storms will be frustrating, particularly as it's the weekend, but we'll do everything we can to keep people moving wherever it's safe to do so," said Craig Gorman, head of operational weather strategy at Network Rail Scotland.
Passengers are advised to check their travel plans before heading out, as the storms increase the risk of flooding and disruption on the railway.
Beyond transportation, the storms also pose a risk of power outages, which could impact mobile phone coverage and other essential services. There is also a slight possibility of damage to buildings, such as roof tiles being dislodged by high winds, and flying debris could present a danger to the public.
The arrival of Storm Austen follows a period of unsettled weather, with another storm, Storm Boelo, also anticipated to sweep across the region.
