Spain is bracing for another heatwave this weekend, with temperatures expected to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) in some regions. This late-summer heatwave follows a summer of record-breaking temperatures and extreme weather across Europe.
The Spanish weather agency AEMET forecasts that the unusually hot weather for early September will begin on Thursday and likely continue through the weekend. Inland Spain is expected to see highs exceeding 35 degrees Celsius (95 F), accompanied by tropical nights where temperatures remain above 20 degrees Celsius (68 F).
Specific areas are anticipating particularly high temperatures. Porreres is forecast to reach 38 degrees Celsius on Saturday and experience the same heat through Monday. Binissalem could see up to 37 degrees Celsius on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Parts of Mallorca are also under a yellow heat alert, with expected temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius or higher.
This heatwave comes after a summer that saw significant heat-related mortality in Spain. Official data from the Health Ministry indicated that nearly 2,150 excess deaths in August were attributable to heat. This figure is the second-highest for August since records began in 2015, surpassed only by the previous year. The region of Catalonia recorded the highest number of heat-related deaths in August, followed by the Valencia and Andalusia regions.
