A rare moth population, absent for seven decades, has been discovered in Northumberland, marking a significant moment for conservation efforts. The dark bordered beauty moth was found at the National Trust's Wallington estate, a find described by Dr. Dave Wainwright of Butterfly Conservation as one of the highlights of his career.
Wainwright, who has been searching for new English colonies of the moth since 2004, visited the Wallington estate in that year but was unsuccessful. "I was hopeful - I'm always hopeful- but I definitely didn't expect it because I've been to so many sites to look for this species over the years," he stated. "It was one of the highlights of my career. Overwhelmingly it was just a feeling of relief that we weren't just fighting the fight at one site anymore."
The dark bordered beauty moth's reliance on only two specific plants—aspen and creeping willow—presents a challenge for its conservation. The discovery at Wallington is particularly significant because the estate's environment differs from Strensall, which had previously formed the basis of conservationists' understanding of a suitable habitat for the species. This divergence in habitat opens up new possibilities for the moth's survival and potential expansion.
"The thing that's kept me going all these years is I always felt there was a chance of finding dark bordered beauty on the Northumberland/Cumbria border – now it feels like there could be other colonies out there waiting to be discovered which would be brilliant," Wainwright added.
The National Trust, which manages the Wallington estate, has indicated its intention to expand the potential habitat for the moth, further supporting conservation goals.
The dark bordered beauty moth was last recorded in England in 1959, and its rediscovery is a testament to persistent monitoring and the potential for species to persist in unexpected locations. Conservationists are now hopeful that further searches may reveal additional colonies in the region. The moth itself is characterized by a yellow body with a distinctive brown border on its wings.
