Concerns have been raised regarding the detrimental impact of quad bikes on wildlife and natural habitats in Irish woodlands. Sinn Féin councillor Terry Crossan has reported that frequent off-road vehicle use in areas like Lisnagra Woods is causing severe habitat loss and disturbing local wildlife, particularly red squirrels and pine martens.

Crossan has communicated these concerns to Coillte Ireland, the state-owned forestry company managing extensive forest land, and An Garda Síochána, the national police service. He highlighted that the activity, which has been ongoing regularly, poses potential dangers to families walking in the woods due to the high speeds at which the vehicles travel. The noise pollution, damage to vegetation, and the creation of muddy terrain, described as a "quagmire," all contribute to a serious impact on the delicate woodland ecosystem.

"This has been going on for quite some time and is happening on a regular basis," Crossan stated. He expressed hope for imminent action to address the repeated incidents of quad bike riding in the woodlands. The reports indicate that the activity has led to significant damage to the natural environment, affecting the populations of protected species.

The issue underscores a broader challenge of balancing recreational activities with environmental conservation in shared natural spaces. Coillte manages approximately 440,000 hectares of land across the Republic of Ireland, much of which is forested and serves as vital habitats for various species.
