Prince William Urges Faster Action on Climate Solutions
Finalists for the Earthshot Prize unveiled as the Prince of Wales emphasizes the need to scale up environmental innovations.
The Prince of Wales has stressed the urgency of accelerating efforts to combat climate challenges, as finalists for this year's Earthshot Prize were announced. The prize, founded by Prince William, aims to find and fund innovative solutions to environmental issues.
Nearly 7,000 nominations from 169 countries were submitted for consideration. The finalists represent a diverse array of community-led initiatives focused on waste reduction, nature restoration, and clean energy.
Among the shortlisted projects are Indigenous ranger teams in Australia and an Argentinian platform using artificial intelligence to detect and alert authorities about wildfires. Two finalists hail from India, which will host this year's Earthshot Prize awards ceremony in Mumbai. These Indian finalists are Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, a manufacturer of electric three-wheelers, and the Mahila Housing Trust, an organization that champions climate resilience for low-income women.
Five winners, each chosen from one of the prize's five categories—Protect and Restore Nature, Revive Our Oceans, Clean Our Air, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate—will be announced at the ceremony in November. Each winner will receive a £1 million prize to support the expansion of their projects.
Prince William, who serves on the Earthshot Prize Council alongside figures such as Queen Rania al-Abdullah of Jordan, actress Cate Blanchett, and chef José Andrés, commented on the progress made. "The solutions are here. The challenge now is scale," he told the BBC. "The progress is real. Now we need to accelerate it. That's exactly why The Earthshot Prize exists."
