An estimated 5 kilometers of the Kilkeel River in County Down has been impacted by a pollution incident that has resulted in a significant fish kill, according to the Department of Environment (Daera).
Species confirmed dead include trout, eels, and lamprey. The Kilkeel Angling Club described the event as the "worst environmental event" they have witnessed, stating that "several generations of juvenile fish have been wiped out." The club warned of serious long-term consequences for the river's salmon and sea trout populations.
Daera officials are investigating the incident, which occurred last week. While no active discharge was immediately found, the department indicated that a "definite line of enquiry is being followed regarding the source of the pollution." The exact number of fish killed is still under investigation.
The Kilkeel River is recognized as an important local watercourse and wildlife habitat. Members of the Kilkeel Angling Club have reportedly invested substantial time and voluntary effort into its protection and improvement, making the scale of the damage particularly distressing.
