A litter of red squirrel kits has been born at a sanctuary in Stonham Aspal, a development conservationists are calling a "fabulous conservation effort" that will help boost population numbers of the endangered British species.
The birth of the young squirrels is a positive step for a species that has seen significant decline. Causes for this decline include the introduction of grey squirrels from the USA and Canada starting in 1876. These invasive squirrels spread the squirrelpox virus, which is fatal to the native red squirrels but not to the grey squirrels. Habitat loss and weak enforcement of existing protections have also contributed to the problem.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has stated that the government is working to protect endangered red squirrels by addressing the threat posed by non-native grey squirrels. Sanctuary staff expressed optimism that this new litter will contribute to the recovery of the red squirrel population.
The conservation efforts aim to reverse the trend of decline and ensure the survival of the species in the UK. Red squirrels are a native mammal of Britain, but their numbers have been drastically reduced over the last century.
