Nature Reserve Faces Two-Decade Recovery After Major Wildfire

A significant wildfire that devastated parts of a nature reserve nearly three months ago will necessitate a recovery period of two decades or more, according to officials.

The blaze, which started on July 29 on the edge of RSPB Minsmere before spreading to neighboring Dunwich Heath on the Suffolk coast, has left long-term implications for the habitat and its wildlife.

Ian Barthorpe, visitor experience officer at Minsmere, expressed concern for the reserve's future.

"It's going to be a long process of recovery of the habitat and some species like the deer and the birds have relocated to other parts of the reserve," Barthorpe explained. "But unfortunately, we're really concerned about the impacts it will have on some of the invertebrates, the plants and the reptiles. It'll be 20 years or more before those parts of the reserve start to look like they used to."

Firefighters have been unable to determine the cause of the fire. While wind conditions and the presence of vegetation and marshland helped prevent the fire from spreading further into the reserve, some trails and heathland areas were heavily impacted.

Even earlier this month, parts of the heathland were still recording underground temperatures exceeding 53C (127F).
