Lakeland Paints, founded in 1989 in Cumbria by Ian West and John Ashworth, offers what it claims are the UK’s first odorless, vegan, and organic paints and varnishes. The formulations are free of heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions in the decorative paint industry.
In Europe, decorative paints and varnishes release approximately 580,000 tonnes of greenhouse gasses and solvents annually. Lakeland Paints' products are primarily composed of water and minerals such as clay and marble, combined with synthetic binders and preservatives. To demonstrate the safety of its paint, founder Ian West previously shared a video of himself consuming a tablespoon of the product.
The company produces its paints to order in Lancashire, offering 372 colors. Each batch is delivered in recyclable packaging.
While Lakeland Paints promotes its eco-friendly credentials, it notes that no paint is entirely impact-free. The recipes still include necessary manufactured binders, pigments, and preservatives to ensure durability. Therefore, while considered a cleaner option, it is not presented as a complete sustainability solution.
Despite these considerations, Lakeland Paints is positioned as a strong choice for eco-conscious consumers. Its zero-VOC status places it among the cleaner paint options available, making it suitable for individuals with allergies or families with young children. The brand also offers an extensive color selection, aiming to combine style with sustainability.
