Island Delegates Convene for Annual Environmental Summit

The annual inter-island environment summit brought together delegates from across the islands to share best practices and foster joint environmental projects. This year's meeting focused on collaborative efforts to address shared challenges in environmental protection and resource management.

Students participated in workshops connected to Guernsey's developing Marine Spatial Plan. These sessions aimed to gather youth perspectives on the future management and preservation of the island's marine environments. Angela Salmon, head of education at the Nature Commission, highlighted the value of involving sixth-form students in discussions about environmental issues critical to them.

During the summit, attendees engaged in field trips to explore local ecosystems and historical sites. Sebastian Dufour, an independent consultant for the Alderney Wildlife Trust, visited Lihou Island. His excursion provided insights into the island's ecology and archaeology, including evidence of a past significant seaweed harvesting industry and the historical presence of a Benedictine Priory.

Dufour emphasized the collaborative spirit of the event, noting that participants from different islands were united by similar environmental challenges. He described the annual meeting as a crucial opportunity for learning from one another, sharing both successful initiatives and lessons learned from setbacks.

The summit serves as a vital platform for delegates to develop new joint projects and refine existing strategies, fostering a united approach to environmental stewardship across the participating islands.
