Hurricane Isaias has strengthened into a Category 3 major hurricane as it churns toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, with landfall expected late Friday. The storm is currently measuring sustained wind speeds of 120 mph (193 km/h), according to hurricane hunter aircraft.
Isaias is forecast to bring damaging winds, torrential rain, and a dangerous storm surge to coastal areas. Hurricane and storm surge watches have been issued for parts of the region.
The Atlantic hurricane season has seen suppressed development so far, with a record-breakingly quiet period attributed to a growing El Niño pattern.
