Measures have been implemented to protect an ancient oak tree in Manthorpe, near Grantham, Lincolnshire, which is believed to date back to the time of Sir Isaac Newton. South Kesteven District Council stated that the tree had experienced significant soil compaction, partly due to ropes being hung from its branches for children's play.
To safeguard the tree and ensure public safety, the authority has erected new wooden fencing to limit access. A council spokesperson indicated that this "minimal intervention" approach is intended to maximize benefits for wildlife and aid in the conservation of the oak for future generations.
Councillor Rhys Baker, the cabinet member for the environment, highlighted the tree's significance, noting that it is recorded on the Woodland Trust's Ancient Tree Inventory. He added that restricting access around the tree will also enhance its rooting environment and contribute to the preservation of this historic feature.
