Green Party leader Zack Polanski has asserted that the climate crisis represents the most significant threat to Britain since the Second World War. Polanski, who describes himself as an "eco-populist," stated he was "sounding the alarm" in response to the country's recent heatwaves and demanded immediate action from the Prime Minister.

During a press conference in Westminster, Polanski presented what he called a "reality check" on "extreme weather." He also criticized Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham for not convening an emergency Cobra meeting in response to wildfires across the UK. Polanski's calls for government action include the establishment of free "cool spaces" in every local area, financial aid for home heatproofing, a new wildfire prevention strategy, and the nationalization of water companies. He further proposed that fossil fuel companies should bear the costs of wildfires and other extreme weather events, including funding for firefighting resources.

Recent weeks have seen several significant wildfires in the UK, including blazes at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, Llanwonno in South Wales, and the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. Polanski noted a lack of government response, stating that ministers had produced "no emergency briefings, no new plan and precious little detail about how this Government will protect people from the crisis." He warned that the current devastation is a precursor to worse events if action is not taken promptly.

Polanski also urged Burnham to "be truthful, be brave" and oppose new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, specifically mentioning the Jackdaw and Rosebank fields. He countered potential arguments about the cost of such changes by stating, "These last few weeks are showing we can't afford not to – we are facing an existential threat."

Appearing at the same event, BBC presenter Chris Packham echoed concerns about the climate crisis. He remarked that "climate breakdown has" arrived, contrasting it with the summer's football outcomes. Packham characterized the government and media's response as a "total dereliction of duty in a time of extreme crisis." He advocated for addressing misinformation through positive information campaigns to ensure the public is aware of the truth. Packham suggested that "irresponsible journalism" should be criminalized, and he "fantasises" about climate denial becoming a criminal offense. He also called for a transition to plant-based diets, identifying animal agriculture as a major driver of biodiversity loss.

Polanski's remarks come at a time when the Green Party has seen a decline in opinion polls and faced scrutiny over internal issues, including antisemitism rows and questions about Polanski's personal financial arrangements and social media use. Polanski, however, denied that his emphasis on environmental issues was an attempt to deflect from these criticisms.
