Buttercups Sanctuary for Goats, located in Boughton Monchelsea, Kent, has completed the purchase of an additional 16.9 acres of land. The expansion is expected to significantly increase the sanctuary's capacity, potentially housing up to 160 goats.
This acquisition marks what sanctuary director Matt Huggins described as the "most significant step since the charity's foundation." The newly acquired plot is situated adjacent to the sanctuary's current site and is intended to provide lasting benefits for the goats and the surrounding environment. The land was historically used for agriculture and will allow the sanctuary to rescue more goats and effectively double its on-site capacity.
While the land presents a "blank canvas" requiring substantial development, the sanctuary anticipates new goats will begin inhabiting the area by spring 2027. Huggins noted that the long-term vision for the expanded site includes the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines, alongside the development of habitat networks for local wildlife. These extensive plans are expected to take several years to fully realize.
"There's a long road ahead, and we are going to need the help of our supporters to make it a final reality, but we've taken the first major step," Huggins stated, emphasizing the need for continued support from the sanctuary's patrons to achieve its ambitious goals. The sanctuary aims to create a sustainable environment that benefits both its animal residents and the broader ecosystem.
