Europe witnessed an exceptionally active summer in 2026, with a total of 893,000 lightning strikes recorded across the continent. Lightning detection experts at Meteorage, a subsidiary of Météo–France, documented every cloud-to-ground strike between June 1 and August 31. While not the most electrically active summer in recent years, it was characterized by several severe thunderstorm outbreaks.

The United Kingdom experienced 14,400 lightning strikes, with the Highlands in Scotland leading the count with 1,691 flashes. North Yorkshire followed with 1,391 strikes. England accounted for approximately 71 percent of the UK's total, with 10,171 strikes, while Scotland recorded 3,645.

Joris Royet, Weather Project Manager at Meteorage, noted that multiple weather patterns favored the development of supercells, which can produce large hail, destructive wind gusts, and even tornadoes. The rugged topography of the Highlands is cited as a reason for its high proportion of lightning strikes, as it forces warm, unstable air upward.

The most intense period of lightning activity in the UK occurred on June 26, when over 63,000 strikes were recorded nationwide within a 24-hour period, according to the Met Office. However, not all of these strikes made ground contact and were included in Meteorage's cloud-to-ground analysis. July, in contrast, was a relatively quiet month, accounting for only two percent of the season's cloud-to-ground activity.

Across Europe, Italy reported the highest number of strikes, followed by France, Spain, Germany, and Switzerland. Mr. Royet highlighted that electrical activity was particularly concentrated in the latter half of June and throughout August. Despite significant events, Summer 2026's activity levels remained above those of Summer 2025, though not reaching the peak years.

This electrified summer followed the Met Office's declaration of Summer 2026 as the UK's hottest on record. The average temperature from June to August was provisionally 16.5C, surpassing the previous records set in 2025 and 2018. The season was also one of the sunniest on record.

Lightning is a natural phenomenon occurring when strong upward drafts within storm clouds generate static electricity. This charge separation leads to a violent electrical discharge. The UN's World Meteorological Organization identifies lightning as a significant hazard that claims many lives annually.
