English Water Companies Fail Environmental Standards Despite Major Investment

The environmental performance of England's water companies has declined for the second year in a row, according to the first joint report from the industry's regulators. Eight of the nine companies received ratings of "poor" or "requiring improvement" for their environmental targets, with only Severn Trent achieving the highest rating.

Despite an industry investment of £5 billion, the report indicates a continued failure to meet environmental standards. The chair of the environmental regulator stated that the findings show the sector "fall well short of the standards rightly demanded by both us and the public."

Water companies were, however, commended for maintaining high-quality drinking water and for reducing disruptions to services. The report marks a significant assessment of the companies' environmental stewardship, highlighting a discrepancy between financial investment and ecological outcomes.
